I set my stopwatch for thirty five minutes as I do every Wednesday at noon, and just as soon as I begin rummaging through the racks I’m accompanied by a sense of anticipation. I wonder, will she show up today? Amongst a sea of fast fashion castoffs and an unsettling amount of Shein labels I am on the hunt for vintage treasures at my local thrift shop. I must shop quickly because I’m expected back at work when the lunch hour is up. I nearly always score a special vintage piece or two, but if I am exceptionally fortunate I will find something with her name neatly sewn inside.
My fascination with the Miss started in the lingerie section on an ordinary hump day (no pun intended). I see this robe made of a weighty satin with a wood grain texture, sewn into color blocks of richly saturated red, magenta, green and black – and I know I’ve found something special. I pull it from the rack and see it; THE NAME that put T-Town on the high fashion map. I’m thrilled to have found this unique vintage treasure!
But having never actually stepped foot into Miss Jackson’s department store, I know next to nothing about the shop, except that it was so far out of my budget that I never thought I would own anything from there. We came to associate her name with exquisite quality, impeccable style, and quite frankly, outrageous cost. And ironically that exorbitant brand positioning, perceived or reality, may have actually played a role in the closure of an iconic 100+ year old business.
There is a silver lining…
Vintage Fashion is not just ‘having a moment’. It’s a full on movement, for many reasons. And honestly, it’s like the after party of twentieth century fashion is in full swing; and everyone knows the after party is more fun!
